Four laboratories, a Science classroom, a greenhouse, a pond and school grounds that include a variety of habitats, provide both accommodation and valuable resources for Science. In Years 7, 8 and 9, pupils follow a course based on Exploring Science. The courses offer work of varying difficulty and challenge to meet the needs of the most and least able pupils. A great deal of practical work in Science is undertaken and extension material is used to broaden pupils’ understanding of the topics covered.
In Year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability tutor groups and in Years 8, 9, 10 & 11 pupils are taught in groups according to their attainment. Each group rotates between 3 teachers to enable them to be taught by specialist teachers. Parents are advised that some chemicals used in Science could stain/ damage clothing if accidentally spilt. We recommend therefore, that pupils bring protective aprons/coats to wear – old shirts are ideal as long as sleeves are not loose.
Marking and Assessment
In Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils work in booklets. They complete one assessed piece of work in each topic, that either focuses on their knowledge or a scientific skill. Each term they have a test based on 3 units of work. Work is marked to assess learning objectives. This may mean that only part of a piece of work is concentrated on. Work is annotated with comments to aid improvement, and some pieces of work may be graded. End of topic tests, and assessment tasks are kept in school to enable moderation and provide evidence for their teacher assessments. Pupils need to learn how to analyse their work and improve it, they are therefore encouraged to mark their own work and that of others with guidance. Pupils in Year 10 and 11 are tested at the end of each unit which is approximately every 8 weeks.
