Science KS3

Our mission in science:

In science our mission is to help your child explore and develop a better understanding of the Big Questions in science. The natural world is full of phenomena that can be observed and we want to teach your child the scientific skills needed to carry out tests, make predictions and learn about the discoveries of others.

KS3 science curriculum:

At South Charnwood students follow a bespoke curriculum based on the KS3 national curriculum.

Note: As a department, we will endeavour to follow the curriculum maps as accurately as circumstances allow. Please be aware that topic orders may change.

KS3 MAP: year 7 & 8

Lessons, marking and assessment:

  • Years 7 and 8 have three lessons per week.
  • Students are taught all three sciences by a science specialist.
  • Students in Year 7 are taught in mixed ability tutor groups.
  • Students in Year 8 are taught in groups based on attainment.
  • Students have 3 end of term tests that encompass a mixture of all three science specialisms.
  • Students are assessed on their ability to answer a Big Question in each topic they study.

“During our brief stay on planet Earth, we owe ourselves and our descendants the opportunity to explore - in part because it's fun to do.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson (Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Centre for Earth and Space in New York City)
