Mathematics

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.  A high quality mathematics education is vital.

Key Stage 3

The Maths Department aims to ensure that all pupils:

• Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
• Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems.

Decisions about progression will be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems.  Those who are not sufficiently fluent will consolidate their understanding before moving on. Pupils are taught in ability groups in all Years.

Pupils build on Key Stage 3 and continue to develop mathematical fluency, reason mathematically and solve problems.

Assessment:

100% external exam.

There are three written papers. Each paper (one non calculator and two with calculator) will take 1 hour 30 minutes each. 

• Foundation Tier Grades 1—5 available
• Higher Tier Grades 4—9 available
