Science
Mission Statement
At South Charnwood High School our intent is to ensure that all pupils:
- Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
- Are equipped with the scientific skills required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. We understand that it is important for lessons to have a skills-based focus, and that the knowledge can be taught through this.
In Science our mission is to help your child explore and develop a better understanding of the Big Questions in science. The natural world is full of phenomena that can be observed and we want to teach your child the scientific skills needed to carry out tests, make predictions and learn about the discoveries of others. It is our aim to nurture pupils’ natural inquisitiveness and promote fields of enquiry that will enable them to become the scientists of tomorrow.
KS3 Science
At South Charnwood pupils follow a bespoke curriculum based on the KS3 national curriculum.
Note: As a department, we will endeavour to follow the curriculum maps as accurately as circumstances allow. Please be aware that topic orders may change.
KS3 Science Homework
-
SENECA tasks where appropriate.
-
Alternative homework - retrieval practice questions, reading, listening to scientific podcasts or watching directed YouTube videos.
Science Enrichment Opportunities
In Science we endeavour to offer a curriculum that inspires our pupils as well as offering experiences that link to the real world and future careers. As such, we have offered:
- Workshops from doctors and university science specialists
- Fire and Police Road Safety Day including VR apparatus
- Visits to The Big Bang Fair at the Birmingham NEC
- Visits to The Natural History and Science museums
- KS3 Forensic Science Lunchtime Club

KS4 Science
At South Charnwood High School our pupils have the option of sitting AQA Combined Science or AQA Separate Sciences (a.k.a. Triple Science). They are taught 3 lessons per fortnight by a subject specialist in each of the three areas of science. Pupils start working towards their science GCSEs in Year 9, where they cover some KS4 content.
KS4 Science Homework
- Science makes use of the Tassomai online learning platform, where pupils should be completing their weekly goals on this system.
- SENECA tasks where appropriate.
- Alternative homework - retrieval practice questions, reading, listening to scientific podcasts or watching directed YouTube videos.
