Well Above |
Pupil is working well above the standard expected for their age and should aim for a GCSE Grade 8-9 (A*). | This would apply to top performing pupils, such as top 10 in the year group. |
8-9 |
|
106-114 |
2 years more than expected age |
110-129 |
Above |
Pupil is working above the standard expected for their age and should aim for at least a GCSE Grade 6-7 (A-B). | This would apply to most able pupils & those working in top sets and the best few pupils in middle sets. |

|
99-105 |
Expected age |
95-109 |
At |
Pupil is working at the standard expected for their age and should aim for at least a GCSE grade 5 (B-C). | This would apply to the biggest majority of pupils, generally in middle sets and maybe the top few in bottom sets. |
5 |
|
91-98 |
At least 1 year below expected age |
80-94 |
Towards |
Pupil is working towards the standard expected for their age and should aim for at least a GCSE grade 3-4 (D-E). | This would apply to pupils who struggle with the academic curriculum and would generally be those pupils in the bottom sets. |
3-4 |
|
80-90 |
2 or more years below expected age |
<80 |
Begining to |
Pupil is begining to work towards the standard expected for their age and should aim for at least a GCSE grade 1-2 (F-G). | This would apply to pupils that generally struggle in an academic sense. These pupils should be looking at a more vocational pathway at GCSE. |

Setting KS3 Targets
For ease, in the previous chart it refers simply to KS2 SAT scores. However, when setting targets for Key Stage Three we also take into account the child’s standardised reading score and MidYis Test score. Through a combination of these 3 elements a pupil’s target is set at either:
- Well Above
- Above
- At
- Towards
- Beginning to
Each of these words refers to the national average. For example, a child that receives a target of ‘At’ is expected to work at the national average for a child in that year group. We believe in making targets at South Charnwood ‘aspirational but attainable’.
Setting KS4 Targets
In Year 10, pupils receive new targets as they begin their GCSEs or other qualifications. As the previous charts show, broadly, GCSE targets are based on what is sometimes referred to as a ‘flight path.’ For example, a child that scored between 91-98 in their Key Stage 2 SATs will often be set targets of ‘Towards’ at Key Stage 3 which they meet and therefore are then set targets of grade 3-4 at GCSE.
However, by Year 10 we know your child much better so we are able to take into account other factors such as attendance, behaviour and attainment at Key Stage 3. So, although targets at Key Stage 4, like at KS3, are dictated by KS2 SATs, we take into account many other factors.
Projected Grades at KS4
As parents you will receive reports throughout Year 10 and 11 that refer not only to a target grade but also a projected grade. The projected grade represents what your child’s teacher thinks they will achieve by the end of their studies. These vary over time as teachers are able to gain a more accurate picture as the 2 years progress.
Pupil Progress Reports
Pupil progress reports for Years 7-9 are produced each term. The progress report will show how your child is progressing against their targets, as well as indicating their attitude to learning, behaviour for learning and homework for learning.
The following criteria is used by staff on pupil progress reports about attitude to learning, behaviour for learning and homework for learning.
|
Attitude to Learning |
Behaviour for Learning |
Homework for Learning |
|
Excellent approach to work at all times |
Excellent behaviour at all times |
Excellent standard of homework always handed in on time |
|
Generally good approach to work |
Generally good behaviour |
Generally good standard of homework usually handed in on time |
|
Fair approach to work though more effort/interest could be shown |
Fair behaviour though more focus is required to improve learning |
The standard of homework is acceptable and usually handed in on time |
|
Inconsistent approach to work and requires improvement |
Inconsistent behaviour affecting his/her learning and requires improvement |
The standard of homework is either inconsistent or not regularly handed in on time |
|
Poor attitude and non-completion of work. Major cause for concern. |
Poor behaviour in lessons affecting the learning of other pupils. Major cause for concern. |
Poor standard of homework produced and/or not handed in on time. Major cause for concern |
You will be informed when these reports are ready to view and can be found in Go4Schools.

Parents evenings
There will be a tutor evening for parents/carers of Year 7 in October to discuss how their child has settled into life at South Charnwood.
There will be subject specific evenings for parents/carers of every year group throughout the Spring and Summer terms. This allows parents/carers to discuss their child’s progress with each of their subject teachers.
