Geography Field Trip Dovedale 2025
On Friday 31st October, 76 Year 11 students successfully completed part of their AQA GCSE Geography fieldwork, undertaking a river study along the River Dove. The aim of the day was to investigate whether the River Dove fits the Bradshaw Model—a geographical theory that outlines how river characteristics change from source to mouth.
Students gathered data on key variables such as channel width and velocity, across multiple sites. This hands-on experience not only helped reinforce classroom learning but also allowed students to apply fieldwork techniques in a real-world setting. Members of the public enjoyed interacting with SCHS students, especially when they saw us measuring velocity with dog biscuits. One particular Labrador managed to gain breakfast, lunch and dinner from the fieldwork, making our school particularly popular!
Their findings will now be analysed to evaluate how closely the River Dove follows the expected patterns of the Bradshaw Model. It was a productive and enjoyable day that brought geography to life. Thankfully, the rain held off until we were leaving.
The human geography section of our fieldwork will be scheduled for February/March. Please look out for further details to come.
Thank you to Mrs Hallam, Head of Humanities, for organising this excellent experience
