Science Department News
This month, the Science department has had the pleasure of working closely with some of our local universities. 30 of our higher prior attaining Year 10s were invited to attend a medical sciences taster day at De Montfort University. They attended lectures and a lab session analysing urine samples for kidney damage in patients. This was a fantastic opportunity to get a feel for university life, surroundings and stoke any potential future career ambitions. DMU even treated them to a well-received meal!
In addition to this, some of these Year 10s were further treated to an in-school visit by Loughborough University student Sophie. Sophie led the class in a session about UV fluorescence, allowing the class to use her UV demonstrator to assess the fluorescence of various household substances and understand how this ties into the future of recycling at home. This excellent hands-on session allowed us to see the kind of projects undergraduates are working on in our area and how our pupils could, in the future, contribute to tackling global environmental issues.
